From history

The first written report about the mineral sources of the Bardejov spa is dated 1247 in the donor deed of the King Bela IV. First written report about the health resort comes from 1505. The spa developed mostly in the 19th century as it was the summer resort of the Austro-Hungarian, Polish and Russian aristocracy. Among the most important personalities of that time who visited the spa were the Austrian empress Elisabeth-Sissi, the Russian tsar Alexander I., Marie-Louise – Napoleons wife.

Climate

Lowlands, sedative, temperate winters, summers without hot days. The clean air bears the scent of resin from the hundred-year-old coniferous forest. A mild inland climate prevails.

Location

It lies 5 kilometers from the town Bardejov, inscribed on the UNESCO Heritage List, in the valley of the Bardejov Brook, also known as „Kvasny“ (sour) Brook. Nearby is Mount Magura (902 meters), which protects the entire spa valley from wind and harsh changes in weather. The center of the spa (the Astoria hotel) is 325 m. above sea level. The orchards and parks that surround the spa have an area of 1,000 hectares. A further 5,000 hectares of surrounding coniferous and mixed deciduous forest provide the area the intimacy of isolation from the impact of civilization, and give the spa valley its particular character.
