Natural curative sources

Thermal mineral water

The unique thermal water rises from ten springs through tectonic breaks from a depth of approximately 2,000 meters. It contains 1,500 mg of mineral elements per liter of water, and is trapped at a depth of 60 m, which guarantees a constant chemical composition and temperature. The water temperature of 10 springs at the outlet is from 67 to 69°C, and it is used for baths and drinking cures. The most important component for treatment of diseases of kinetic locomotive apparatus is the high content of sulfur (from 6 to 10 mg/liter), which occurs in the water in forms of sulfane and sulfides. Even the high content of hydrogen sulphide is important – 4,3 up to 12 mg/liter of water.

Sulfur mud

The Spa Piestany's sulphur mud is a unique peloid. Its base is a homogenized sediment created in a branch of the river Vah on the site of the current hot springs of the sulphuric thermal mineral water. It is prepared for balneological application using an original technology which causes it to mature and regenerate and is accompanied by a multitude of chemical and biological reactions. The mature mud has a butter-like consistency, it is greasy, malleable, with good heat conducting features, it cools down four times slower than water.

From history

Etymologists see the origin of the name Pescan in the word “sand”. The first settled colonization originated near the sandy soils around the river Vah. Archaeologists have found here and in surrounding locations incredibly interesting discoveries and finds of bones of prehistoric animals and traces of some settling by prehistoric humans that give evidence of the attraction of the hot springs in this fertile valley. People say that curative effects of our springs were first discovered by Roman legions.

The first written reference about Piestany is stated in Zoborska deed from 1113. Future fame and international general knowledge of Piestany as a spa town started to be born in the second half of 17th century. Aristocrats and noblemen, owners of grounds and properties, they started to build above the springs the spa buildings. In 1821 squire of Piestany count Jozef Erdody, head of Nitriansky region and state minister of the Vienna government, began construction of the first bathtub and pool baths. A crucial era in development of Piestany spas is wedded to the name of the family Winter.
